What are you smoking? The tangled web of cannabis varieties: Cannabis comes in a thousand flavors

With other plants, these would each be a distinct seed line or clonal cultivar. But cannabis hasn’t been through the modern breeding processes that lead to stable seed lines. So every single seed is a unique individual. Clonal varieties exist, but the constant drive for novelty (and inconsistent growing practices) has kept these short-lived. The result is that we hardly ever know for sure what we’re smoking. The surprise in every joint is kind of fun. But it’s keeping civilians away from cannabis, and it can’t go on. Population genetics can solve this problem. Growers who care about it will be able to guarantee a consistent and reliable product to their customers and their patients. And your parents might even start smoking pot again.
